A collaboration between SMa and Singapore Polytechnic (SP) five years ago has helped Singapore to save million of dollars.

The link up between SMa and SP has become a game changer for food manufacturers, farms and supply-chain managers. The collaboration involves the development of the course content by the Singapore Cold Chain Centre, under SMa and SP to conduct the training for the workforce thereby extending the shelf-life of perishable goods.

Firms with trained workers can implement Singapore Standards on Cold Chain Management and help the firms to reduce wastage and cost and at the same time improve the quality of the products to meet consumers’ need for fresh and safe products.

For instance, by adopting the CP 95: Cold Chain Management of Milk & Dairy Products, the expiry date for milk can be extended from 18 days to 24 days. This can in turn generate about $240,000 savings for the company per year.

Mr Dave Huang, a business development manager of Kok Fah Technology Farm, which produces vegetables, is one of the beneficiaries.

“Through the training, we realised that even though we had a controlled supply chain, there were still gaps,” he said. “But we have since been able to close the loop in our cold-chain management and to achieve SMa’s industry standard.”
